Do I Need a License or Permit to Own a Firearm in Texas?
No license, no permit, no registration. What Texas actually requires to buy and keep a firearm at home.
Short answer: no. Texas doesn’t require a state license or permit to own a firearm. You don’t register the gun. You don’t ask the state’s permission. You buy it, you own it.
What Texas does require
You have to be legally allowed to possess a firearm under federal and state law. That means passing a background check when you buy from a federally licensed dealer, meeting the minimum age for the firearm type, and not falling under any of the disqualifiers we cover in another post.
What Texas does NOT require
- A permit to own.
- A permit to keep a firearm at your home or place of business.
- A registry entry.
- A training certificate.
Where a license still helps
The Texas License to Carry (LTC) is optional now, but it opens doors. It speeds up gun-store background checks, gets you reciprocity in about three dozen other states, and proves you’ve been through vetted training. If you’re new to carry, or you travel, an LTC is worth every dollar.
