Description

Texas License to Carry (LTC) Certification Class. Covers all state-mandated curriculum including the newest changes to Texas law and even some nuances you may not have known.

What you’ll do

  • Classroom Instruction · 4+ hours — State-mandated curriculum, plus 2026 law updates and practical nuances. Culminates in a 25-question True/False/Multiple Choice state test.
  • Shooting Proficiency Test · 30 to 45 minutes on the Range — Range Safety Brief, then course of fire scored on a B-27 target (provided) using the 5/4/3 scoring diagram. Minimum passing score 70% (175 of 250 possible).

  • Class: $75.00 (includes range fee)

Not included (you’ll handle these directly with the State of Texas)

  • State application fee. Visit txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/ltc/ to fill out your DPS application and pay the non-refundable $40.00 fee. Some applicants are eligible for a discount — see the DPS FAQ for details.
  • Fingerprinting fee. You’ll be prompted to schedule your fingerprinting via IdentoGo at the end of the DPS application — $10.00.

Note: You do not have to have your DPS application filled out before your LTC class. That only matters if you’d like your fingerprints done before or on the same day as the class.

What is a Texas License to Carry (LTC)?

A Texas License to Carry (LTC) is a state-issued license that allows qualified individuals to carry a handgun openly or concealed in public places throughout Texas. The LTC replaced the previous Concealed Handgun License (CHL) in 2016, expanding carry options for license holders.

Who is eligible for a Texas LTC?

To qualify for a Texas LTC, you must meet basic requirements: 21 years old (with limited exceptions for active military), no felony convictions, no Class A or B misdemeanor convictions in the past 5 years, no disqualifying protective orders, no disqualifying mental health adjudications, and current on taxes, child support, and state-guaranteed student loans. Texas residents must have lived in Texas at least 6 months. Confirm current rules through Texas DPS.

What training is required for the LTC?

Texas requires a state-approved LTC course covering Texas handgun laws, use of force, handgun safety, conflict resolution, and responsible carry practices. Minimum classroom time is 4 hours. The course ends with a 25-question True/False/Multiple Choice state test.

Do I need to take a shooting test?

Yes. Most applicants must complete a range proficiency test as part of the Texas LTC process. You'll shoot 50 rounds at a B-27 target, follow RSO commands, and demonstrate safe handling and basic marksmanship fundamentals. In practice it's a familiarization and safe-handling demonstration — not a difficult pass/fail event.

What score do I need to pass?

The Texas LTC proficiency test is scored out of 250 points; you need 175 (70%) to pass. The course of fire and scoring will be thoroughly explained before we start the range portion.

The LTC class is not the place to learn how to shoot — students should be familiar with their firearm and know firearms-safety fundamentals before enrolling. If you're new to shooting or nervous around firearms, ask about our Introduction to Handguns course first.

What should I bring to class?
  • Valid driver's license
  • Semi-auto handgun or revolver
  • 50 rounds of ammunition (extra recommended for re-shoots)
  • Eye and ear protection (REQUIRED on the range)
  • Writing utensil
  • Water/snacks if desired (water, soda, and snacks available for purchase)
Can I qualify with a revolver?

Yes. You can qualify with either a semi-automatic pistol or a revolver as long as you can safely handle it and complete the course of fire.

Do I need my own gun and ammo?

It's preferred you bring your own handgun and ammunition — ideally the ones you've been practicing with prior to class. We have rental handguns of different calibers available with ammunition for an additional $30 fee.

How much does the full LTC process cost?

Class: $75 (includes range fee)
State application fee: $40 (paid directly to Texas DPS)
Fingerprinting: $10 (paid at the IdentoGo location)
